In India, currently, the incidence of stroke is estimated to be 14.40 lakh per annum out of which 2.59 lakh people die and as many as 11.81 lakh survive with disability. Scientific and timely rehabilitative measures will enable the survivors to reintegrate themselves into the society.
Founded in 2011, LiveWell, an Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine at Poovanthi, Sivagangai district strives hard to improve the lives of people affected with stroke. The mission is to provide all necessary physical, social, emotional, vocational skills and to enable these patients reach highest possible level of independence, quality of life and integrate back into their family and community. The institute has been continuously providing services in the areas of stroke management and other neurological conditions, injuries to brain and spinal cord and orthopaedic injuries.
The centre has treated more than 1200 patients, and currently manages an inpatient volume averaging 300 patients per year. While acute care centres treat only the illness of the patient during the serious stage of the disease, we, in our rehab centre, attend to the overall development of the patient by providing a holistic approach that takes into consideration the physical, mental and emotional dimensions of his/her health. This is achieved by providing intimate and personalised attention, quietness of mind and sense of independence to handle one’s self and lead a normal life.
Situated 23 kms away from Madurai, the institute is spanned over 60 acres in a pollution free environment away from hustle of the city and is coupled with state-of-the-art facilities made available under one roof. The entire area is blessed with greenery and scenic beauty providing ideal ambience for patients to go on a walk or a ride on the wheel chair. The whole environment is green, natural and quiet and so, the acceptance of the treatment becomes easy for the patients and their families.
